Rick James’s curly lob haircut with the curly bangs is unforgettable. Here is a step-by-step tutorial telling you exactly how you can get this haircut at home.

Step 1: Prep your hair

Prior to getting a haircut (especially a DIY cut), your hair must be properly washed and conditioned. This applies to all types of hair as it ensures your hair is in its true form without any oiliness that can cause mistakes in your judgment when cutting your hair. You can cut your hair either on dry hair or damp hair.

Step 2: Comb your curls

Curly hair cutting is tricky because you never know the result. Your curl can sometimes curl too much and sometimes it is straighter than at other times.

What you want to do is to ensure you comb using a wide-toothed comb so that there are no knots and tangles in your hair. You then want to section the area where you will cut your bangs and tie the hair with a hair tie.

Step 3: Cutting into a bob

Part your hair from the center and then bring your hair to the front on your shoulders. You should have one section on the left shoulder and the other on your right shoulder.

Then hold your hair using one hand and cut with the other using scissors. You want to eyeball the length of the lob and cut less than you think you need to because your hair will curl back up. Do the same on the other side.

Step 4: Cutting the bangs

Tie the cut hair in a ponytail to keep it away. Now cut the bangs by first letting your hair loose on your forehead so you can see how long you want to cut it.

Then hold all the hair and then cut it straight through. Check how straight the bangs are horizontally then cut the hairs that don’t fall in a straight line. You can use the point-cutting method of cutting for extra volume and texture.
